2007 Kub Kar Rally

It’s KubKar Season!

The Chavalla Area Kub Kar Rally will be held in Ormstown on March 17th.  We will be arranging car pools, so please ask Akela for details.  Times to be announced soon.  Youth are requested to bring shoes to wear inside.  Lunch will be provided.  We are expecting approx. 100 Cubs to race.

There will also be Beaver Buggy and Scout Truck Races, so please come!

Please make sure you read the rules listed below.  This way there will not be any disappointments....

Kub Kars are meant to be a fun, learning experience and designed for self?esteem building ? like most Cubs activities!  Cubs should be allowed to express their own creativity and individuality by encouraging them to come up with their own designs and decorations.  Adults are most definitely needed to help out using the power/sharp tools to ensure the design is cut to the Cub's specifications.  Adults can also help out with hot glue guns for decorations, affixing wheels, and adding weights. And don't forget cheering for them on race day!  They really appreciate it.

Kub Kars are available at the Scout Shop.  (We usually have some in stock, so ask before travelling to Montreal.  .  The kit comes in a box and is complete with a block of wood, nails for axles, and wheels.  There are other kits available - pre-cut cars, decorations, etc.  Make sure that your finished car uses the wheels and axles provided with the Kub Kar kit (there are other options available, but will not be allowed at the Area race) and that the measurement regulations are followed (see the rules below.)  If you don’t have the necessary tools, the pre-cut cars are very convenient (and cost a bit more -- and you still need the wheels and axles from the kit...)

Kub Kar Rally Rules

These are the rules that will be in force at rallies.  The will be strictly adhered to at the Area rally.

Vehicle Specifications

Maximum dimensions (including wheels and any attachments) width: 2 3/4" (7 cm); length: 7" (18 cm); height: 3" (7.5 cm).

Minimum clearances (including any attachments): body to ground: 3/8" (.95 cm); between opposing wheels: 1 3/4" (4.5 cm).

Maximum weight: 5 oz (142 grams).  The car may be hollowed out and filled with metal, or metal may be added to the outside, provided that it is securely built into the car.  Taped?on weights or magnets of any kind are not allowed.  Weight must be removed if the car is overweight at registration.  The judge’s scale is correct.

Lubricant  - You may only use graphite as a lubricant for the wheels.  Graphite is VERY messy, so you can only use it outside before the race.

Wheels and axles  - Only wheels and axles from the Kub Kar kit are allowed.  Axles may be polished.  Wheels may be lightly sanded to remove any rough spur remaining from the mold, but no other modification of the wheels is allowed ?? wheels must retain their original rectangular cross?section and width.  Weights inside the wheels, wheel bearings, washers, bushings, springs, and other types of suspensions are not allowed.  The car must be free?wheeling, and may only be propelled by the force of gravity.

Decoration and Attachments  - Details such as doors, windows, stripes, etc. may be painted on the car.    Any decals or decorations may be used.  Details such as steering wheel, drivers, etc., are permissible but must be securely fastened to the car.  No loose or moveable materials of any kind are permitted in or on the car.  No materials can be added to or removed from the car between racing and design judging.

Registration

Each car must meet official specifications before it can be registered.

The name of the Kub Kar owner and the pack he is from must be clearly visible on the underside of the car.

Racing

Only the owner and race officials are allowed to handle a car.

Any Cub arriving late may register and race if races are still being run.  Otherwise, the Cub may take part in the other events.

During the course of the day, a car's owner may make minor adjustments or repairs to his or her car at the discretion of Rally Officials.  The car will be re?inspected before it races again.

The decisions of Rally Officials concerning all races and events are final.

Other Rules

No running in hallways or wandering beyond the designated areas.

All Cubs and leaders should be in uniform.

Hints

Experience has shown that the closer a car is to the maximum weight (5 ozs), the better it will do.  It is a good idea to have some weight easily removable, in case your scale is different from the one used on race day.

If Kub Kars are dropped or badly handled, the wood cracks around the axles and the wheels fall off/break - not good for racing.  Treat your Kub Kar karefully!
